June 2017 Panther Press
The 2016-2017 school year is quickly coming to a close. The JCS students, families, and staff have all worked so hard to make this a great year. Thank you to everyone for their many contributions to the school. I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful learning institution. I look forward to seeing all of you at our end of the school year events. Be sure to check the calendar at jcsk8.org so that you do not miss any special events.
To express our gratitude for all of the parents and community members that volunteer at Jacoby Creek School, the staff will be hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Tea on Monday, June 5th at 8:30 am in the library. Please come enjoy coffee, tea, treats, music and good company. Thank you so much volunteers!!
With gratitude,
Melanie Nannizzi
Walk and Roll into Summer Break
Our final Walk & Roll to School Day will be on Wednesday, June 7. Walking and riding to school is fun and easy. Using your feet or bike to get to/from school helps instill independence and makes kids stronger and healthier. Walk & Roll to School encourages slower, safer, and less car traffic. It can have a positive effect on our children’s lives, community, and the world. Join us on June 7 by walking or riding from home, meeting at a friend’s house and leave from there, or joining the walking group leaving from Bayside Rd. at 8:00. See you June 7!
Outstanding Balances
Please assist us in wrapping up the school year in an organized fashion. Be sure to pay any outstanding daycare, lunch, After School Enrichment, and library fine bills as soon as possible. Also, be sure to return any library books!
Session III After-School Enrichment
ASE Session Three Ends with the make-up classes on Monday, June 5 because of the Monday holiday in May. There will be make-up classes during the week June 6- 9. Classroom teachers will have lists for make-up classes.
Email Communication
Please make sure that your email information is up to date with our office prior to the end of the school year. We are using email and jcsk8.org to share information and it is important that the school has the correct contact information for your family. Also, please let the office know if you do not use email and would prefer mail. Thank you!
Registration for 2017-2018
We currently have waiting lists for all grades except for third grade. Please pass the word if you know any families with a student who will be in third grade next year that are interested in attending JCS.
If your child currently attends JCS, they are already registered at our school and are guaranteed a spot next year. If you know that your family will not be attending JCS next year, please let the office know so that we are aware of any available spaces for other families who may be interested in attending and so the teachers can prepare balanced class lists for next school year.
Phone Watches
Recently many students have been coming to school wearing watches that have a phone in them. I wanted to let families know that these phones will be treated the same way that typical cell phones are treated. Cell phones are not allowed to be out during the school day. Students will need to check their cell/watch in with teacher or keep them in their backpacks.
Immunizations Requirements
Recent California legislation requires that all students entering Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and seventh grade are up to date on their immunizations. If your child is going into seventh grade, be sure that they are up to date on their Tdap! The school will not be able to allow students to start school next year if they do not meet this requirement. Please make sure that your child is ready to start the 2017-2018 school year. More information about this law can be found at www.shotsforschool.org. Please call the office if you have any questions about how this impacts your child.
Summer Hours
The school office will be open from 8:00 am -4:30 pm on weekdays until June 23. For the remainder of the summer, it will be open from 8:00 am-1:00 pm.
The Activity Center will be open from 7:30 am-5:30 pm all summer long. Please check in with Colleen if you are interested in using the Activity Center this summer.
Detailed schedules and hours for both the school office and the Activity Center can be found at www.jcsk8.org.
Athletics
It’s time to get ready for the 2017-18 school year. Fall Sports Night will be August 30, 2017 at 6:00 pm. This parent meeting is mandatory for students who are interested in participating in a fall sport: cross country (coed K-8), golf (coed 5-8), and girls volleyball (7/8). If you are unable to attend, please send a representative for your child.
In order to participate in try-outs, practices and to compete, athletes are required to have the following forms on file:
- PRE-PARTICIPATION PHYSICAL EVALUATION(PHYSICALS ARE VALID FOR ONE YEAR FROM THE DOCUMENTED DATE OF EXAM)**
- ATHLETIC CONTRACT
- ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND ASSUMPTION OF POTENTIAL RISK
ALL FORMS MUST BE TURNED IN ANNUALLY and can be found on our website at jcsk8.org. The deadline to turn in paperwork for all fall sports into the office is September 5, 2017.
**Humboldt County is a rural community. There is typically a three-month wait for well care visits. Families of student athletes should consider calling their primary care physicians now to schedule their pre-participation physical appointments for over the summer.
