Garden Club Spring 2016

It is time for Spring Garden Club, 2016. Finally we have some sunshine to dry out the very welcome rainfall, and the soil is just starting to warm up. There have been several changes to the garden this Winter, mainly due to efforts to reduce the impact of the increasingly strong and prevailing winds blowing in from the water, but also to create a more flexible and creative central area.

We will take advantage of the heavy rainfall to move some of the usual central area crops to the peripheral areas that have excellent soil and a good source of sub surface water to start out the season. With 100% more stored water than last year, we are looking forwards to self sufficient irrigation carefully distributed around the primary growing areas. Acknowledging that there is more rain to come, we will start Garden Club next week in case we have to cancel a session at some point.

Spring Schedule:

  • Grades 1 – 3 (Maximum 20) Wednesdays from April 6th – June 8th, (except April 13th) from 2:15pm – 3:15pm
EXCEPT for April 6th which will be 1:15pm – 2:15pm.
  • Grades 4 – 8 (Maximum 12) Wednesdays from April 6th – June 8th (except for April 13th) from 3pm – 4pm
EXCEPT for April 6th which will be 2:15pm – 3:15pm.
  • TK and K (Maximum 12) Thursdays from April 7th – June 9th (except April 14th) from 2:15pm – 3:15pm
EXCEPT for April 7th which will be 1:15pm – 2:15pm.

Please note that this is a smaller, quieter group to accommodate younger children. I do accept a couple of 1st grade students if there is space. Please enroll your child only if he or she really wants to participate, and if he or she can follow directions and understand that the rules in the garden are there for safety reasons and to ensure that all of the children enjoy their experience.

There is a request for a $10.00 supply fee donation. Upcoming events: Jacoby Creek School Garden will have an exhibit at the annual Godwit Days event in the Arcata Community Center. Please come and visit us, and enjoy all of that the other exhibits have to offer.
Friday, April 15th: 5pm – 7pm; Saturday, April 16th: 10am – 5pm; Sunday, April 17th: 10am – 3pm.

Jacoby Creek School Garden Annual Open Day with Lemonade, Plants, Starts and baked goodies. This is our annual event when we open the garden to the public for the day, and it is our primary fund raising event. The garden is a 100% volunteer venture with all of our funding dependent upon donations. The date is later this year due to the weather: Saturday, May 7th, from 10am – 3pm. We will have dozens of flower, herb and vegetable starts available, as well as a variety of donated plants and shrubs. Please come and support us. If you would like to enroll your child/children please contact Sue Moore: sue@mind.ucsd.edu for a permission slip.
