March 2017 Panther Press

Dear Jacoby Creek Families,

I hope that this month’s Panther Press finds you doing well.  Even with a week off from school, February was a busy month here at JCS.  I continue to be amazed by our JCS students, families, and staff.  We truly have a school to be proud of and it is because of how much effort and pride people put into making this place great!!  This month’s Panther Press is full of congratulations for all of the JCS students that have worked hard and represented our school in academics and in sports.

I wanted to remind families to please use our voicemail number to leave attendance messages.  The office phone is only answered between 8:00 a.m. -4:30 p.m., but you can leave voicemail at (707) 633-9090 at any time.  Please enter this number into your contacts. The messages are checked frequently.  This is a great timesaver for us in the office if you have a non-urgent message about attendance.  

There have been a lot of illnesses going around with all of this cold weather.  Thank you for keeping your child home if they have a fever or are vomiting.  If your child is not ill, please be sure to make regular attendance a priority.  It is so important for students to be here every day to get the most out of their education.

The Jacoby Creek Children’s Educational Foundation is really gearing up the the annual AUCTION!  Thank you so much to the JCCEF members for all of the time and energy being invested in making this a great event!  Come and join us on Saturday March 18, 2017 at the Arcata Community Center for the annual JCCEF Dinner, Auction, and Dance. Donations for silent and live auctions are still needed. Registration for 2017-2018

Now is the time to register for the 2017-2018 school year.  If your child already attends JCS, there is no need to register.  If you have an incoming TK or K student make sure to get your registration packet in soon.  Please call the office with any questions.

Geography Bee News

Congratulations to 8th grader, Mina Abbassi! Mina has been notified by the National Geographic Society that she is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2017 California National Geographic State Bee. The contest will be held in Sacramento on Friday, March 31, 2017. This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 29 th year. School Bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout

the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took a qualifying test,which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society has invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the State Bees.

Each state champion will receive $100, the National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World, 4th Edition and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent their state in the National Geographic Bee Championship to be held at National Geographic Society headquarters, May 14-17, 2017. The national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and an all expenses paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the new National Geographic Endeavour ll.

REGIONAL SPELLING BEE

The Regional Spelling Bee was held today at Fieldbrook School.  Big congratulations are in order for John Gerving and Ashley McLaughlin!  JCS sixth grader John Gerving took took first place!  Fifth grade, Ashley Mclaughlin took third.  Excellent work to our super spellers!

MATH COUNTS

The Humboldt County Math Counts competition was held yesterday at Sunnybrae middle school.  Eighth Graders Vivian Gerstein, Maddie Lankarani, Marisa Mendosa, Kayla Jay, Ella Day, Austin Costello-Anderson, and MIna Abbassi and Seventh Graders Sydney Trieu, Drew Vizenor, Stanley Guo, and Owen Miranda-Hupp represented Jacoby Creek School at the competition.

The final team results have not yet been released, but the results that have come in show that our team did very will be moving on to compete at the next level.  Eighth grade students Marisa Mendosa and Ella Day both took top honors at the competition.  Ella was the winner of the Countdown Round and Marisa won the Individual Competition.

ALL COUNTY MUSIC FESTIVAL

Congratulations to the following outstanding music students who will be participating in the All County Music Festival at Arcata High School, March 17 & 18. The performance will be 7 pm in the AHS Gym, on Saturday the 18th.

Boys’ Basketball

Congratulations to our 8th grade boys!  They earned a spot in the 49th Annual Crescent City JayCees!! Play hard and have fun boys!!

Track & Field

Foggy Bottom Milk Run

Run with Jacoby Creek School in the 2 Mile Fun Run on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 2PM.  Register online at www.foggybottommilkrun.com (make sure to select JCS).  There is a special $10 entry fee (includes T-shirt & medal) for the 2 Mile Run for elementary school participants, girls and boys ages 5-14.

Support JCS Athletics:  Our Athletics Program is solely funded by monetary donations and profits from hosting tournaments.  Please consider sponsoring an Athletics Banner and/or volunteering at one of our tournaments—both are great ways to support JCS Athletics.
